Mattress Buying Guide for Side Sleepers

Mar 2, 2015

Not only is sleeping on your side now proven to be one of the healthiest ways to sleep, but it is very common too. So it shouldn’t be too hard to find the perfect mattress to give you that sought after good night’s sleep, right

With some simple pointers you can be on your way.

If you already sleep on your side, you may be doing your body a favor and not even know it. Both doctors and chiropractors have said that sleeping on your side allows your body to rest in a very natural state. Unlike some other sleeping positions, sleeping on your side allows your spine to rest as it relieves pressure from your back. Sleeping in this position is also easy on your joints and can even help with snoring that can not only hinder your sleep but anyone else in the room as well.

No matter what position you sleep in, it is important to find the right mattress in order to ensure a good night’s sleep. If you have a mattress that is geared toward those who sleep on their stomachs or their backs, for instance, your sleep may be restless and even painful in the morning.

For side sleepers, it is vitally important to find a mattress that conforms to the natural curves of the body. Since the benefit of sleeping on your side is the result of the spines neutral position, the mattress you choose must support your natural contours and curves in order to gain that benefit. As a general rule of thumb, softer mattresses tend to offer this better than firm mattresses. Both firm mattresses with a pillow top and softer mattresses can offer a comfortable night’s sleep.

One thing to keep in mind is that “soft” doesn’t always mean unsupportive. Today’s mattresses come in so many styles that often include firmer models with a firm base and soft pillow top. While trying out different models, if you don’t like the feeling of the cloud-like soft mattress, try a firm model with a pillow top to get that happy medium.

Most of all, when shopping for your new mattress, keep in mind that a medium soft to soft mattress will offer the maximum comfort. Narrow down your search easily by eliminating any mattresses that are excessively firm.
